I worked on that is nearing completion in Westport, CT.It is a typical builder’s colonial built in the 1970’s. My clients, both from Europe, bought the house with the intention of transforming it into a style more suited to their tastes.
We removed the siding and double hung windows and added casement windows and new siding which was a combination of “Hardieplank” clapboard (top) and “Boral” vertical shiplap (bottom). Both are composite materials that contain a percentage of recycled content.
By removing the siding, we were able to add 1 ½ “ of rigid polyisocyanurate foam insulation (R-11) before replacing the siding. The window openings were framed out with 2x4s for window nailing. We used “Hydrogap” house wrap and 1×3 wood strapping which provided ventilation for the siding and allows any moisture that gets behind the siding to escape.
The only major construction was a 5 ft. addition on the front of the house to expand the existing Living Room and add more windows and skylights.
We replaced the existing kitchen with an “Alno” kitchen, made in Germany.
The floors were removed and replaced with a radiant floor heating system that consisted of a 1 ½” lightweight “gyp-crete” slab poured over a network of PEX hydronic tubing. Above that we used “Porcelannosa”tile.
The hot water for the radiant floor and the domestic hot water is supplied by an energy efficient gas fired “Viessmann” condensing boiler. Supplemental heat is supplied by three solar flat plate collectors on the roof (also by Viessmann).
New low-energy-use LED lighting was added throughout the house.
