I recently had the pleasure of having a client give me some "latitude" to completely transform a dilapidated old shed in the woods behind her house. She wanted to replace it with a screened porch which would serve as an outdoor room, surrounded by nature where she could go to read, relax and have conversations.
We went with a design which isa modern version of a greek temple! I created a simple gabled structure with 8 columns and floor to ceiling screens between them.
The large front opening has a concealed “Phantom” screen which rolls down and is controlled by a hand-held remote.
The challenge was to design the structure to withstand lateral (wind) loads without using diagonal braces. My engineer came up with a solution using steel angles welded together at a 90 degrees. There are 2 of these at each corner attached to the wood column and beam. They are covered with the azek trim.
My client is very happy with her room and having a special place to get away from the house, and into a whole extra space that serves a multitude of uses, from solitary to shared.
